Valorization of flax shives in cosmetic: creation of an innovative secondary packaging
Résumé
The LENEFIN
collaborative project involves designing of flax based perfume by u tilizing flax
principally produced here in Normandy , ideally two products : fragrance and secondary packaging.
The project consortium worked to explore the whole flax plant for its possible valori z ation [1].
About secondary packaging part , the obje ctive is to develop a modular and sustainabl e secondary
packaging through employin g an eco design approach which is co nsisting of a central cylinder
composed of long woven flax fibers and a base a s well as a lid of identical shape produced from a
mineral matrix s upplemented with flax shives, a by product obtained during its scutching [2]. The
work pres ented here will concern the base and the lid of the packaging. To achieve the desired
shapes, the v iscosity of the optimiz ed formulation must allow the realization b y molding. The
formulation of th e basic c ement matrix is as follows: 55% standard cement 42.5 MPa ; 45% fine
sand 0 2 mm . The role of sand is to maintain proper mechanical strength and provid e a visually
interesting mortar texture. This also makes it possib le to avoid a smooth t exture of a cement paste
alone, which already exists i n t he market. To this basic mineral matrix, various concentrat ions of
raw, crushed and mineralized flax shives [3; 4] ranging from 5 to 15% were attained Figure 1 ).
Mechanical tes ts (compressive and flexural strength) at 28 days of hard ening as well as
wetting drying test s to evaluate the resistance to water and temperature were carried out for all the
formulations. The results indicat ed that 6% of flax shives previously crushed to 2 mm is the optim al
dosage, whi le it was 8% in case of mineralized flax shives . The water resistance tests have also
demonstrated a high resistance to water for all the formulations, which is extremely positive for use
in a high humidity environment , thus mak ing it possible to envisage a wide range of applications for
a second life.
